Music is taught for 2 hours a fortnight at Telford Langley School, and then becomes optional from KS4. The aim during the first term in Year 7 is for the students to be introduced to the basic and foundational skills within Music, such as understanding the tone and texture of a piece of music and identifying basic instruments. Then throughout KS3 students continue to develop Music with the intention to build a wide skill set.

We have strong cross curricular ties with several subjects including English, History, PSHE and Cultural Studies and, as a result of this Y7 and Y8 SOW’s are closely linked to relevant topics across the departments. Student use the techniques and strategies within Performing Arts to develop key skills in Drama and Music whilst developing transferable skills such as team work, problem solving, communication and collaboration.

The Assessment for Learning in the performing Arts department is split into 3 key areas:

CREATING - researching, discussing, questioning, thinking, sharing and shaping, experimenting.

PERFORMING - imparting meaning to an audience through a physical form.

RESPONDING - expressing an understanding of what the drama is saying and how it is saying it using the mediums of drama, singing and movement.

KS4 - Students follow Edexcel’s BTEC Performing Arts and within this they can follow a choice of routes. These routes are Dance, Drama, Music and Production skills. The course is made up of 3 Units.

Unit 1 – An Individual Showcase (externally assessed) In this Unit students learn about real life routes into a career within the Performance Industry. The assessed task is to audition for a role, in their chosen specialism, consisting of a letter of application and 2 audition pieces.

Unit 2 – Preparation, Performance and Production. In this Unit students take on the role of a production team, they work through the entire process of live performance and create a finalised extract from the chosen script to show to a live audience.

The 3rd Unit will depend on the students chosen specialism -each of these units studied the keys skills and elements of the specialism and result in a final performance in a Performing Arts Showcase for Music this is Unit 6 – Musical Performance Skills
